A May Poem
May walks in with steady stride,
Warm sun rising, winter aside.
The grass grows thick, the days grow long,
The birds return with morning song.
The yard calls out, the tools come near,
Old work returns this time of year.
The mower hums, the gardens wake,
The coffee’s strong, the dawn won’t wait.
Then comes the thrill May always brings,
Fast horses, roaring engines, wings.
The Kentucky Derby runs proud and fast,
A two-minute dream that flies too fast.
Bright hats, big hopes, the bugle’s call,
One perfect race can change it all.
And then the mighty Indianapolis 500 day,
Where engines thunder all the way.
Five hundred miles, the courage shown,
Men chasing speed, grit carved in stone.
Cold drinks, hot grills, the checkered flag,
No room for fear, no time to lag
Baseball games on radio play,
While spring rolls easy through the day.
The grill comes out, the neighbors wave,
The simple things feel rich and brave.
May brings memories, old and bright,
Of longer days and softer light.
Of mothers, friends, and fallen men,
Whose stories live each year again
A man stands still, looks up, and knows
Life moves much like the lilac grows—
Quiet, steady, bold, and true,
With every May beginning new.
